Many folks have probably seen the original “Father of the Bride” with Spencer Tracy playing Elizabeth Taylor’s father. It is a wonderful, warm film, with Spencer Tracy narrating, in stream of consciousness form, the events leading up to his daughter’s engagement and subsequent marriage.
Joan Bennett plays the mother (good to see her outside of “Dark Shadows,” where I had her typecast in my youth as the reclusive Elizabeth Stoddard); Billie Burke plays the mother-in-law (ironically, she also is best known for a horror genre role–as Glinda the Good Witch in “Wizard of Oz”).
What I did not realize until tonight is that a sequel to “Father of the Bride” was made a year later with the same cast. “Father’s Little Dividend,” about Elizabeth Taylor’s first pregnancy and the birth of Spencer Tracy’s first grandchild, is another winsome, heartwarming film.
They don’t make them like this anymore!
