Just a Thought: Words Matter

13 Dec

Isaiah 53:12, “Therefore will I divide him [a portion] with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.”

There it is.  The central message of Christmas.  The central message of life on this planet.

Do we align with that or is our central message something else?

If we are not sure, we could ask our friends, our co-workers, . . . our spouse.

If we are called by the name of Christ, who was punished for our sins and for the sins of the whole world, do we spend our time painting ourselves as sinless and everyone else around us as transgressors who deserve the wrath of God, even after they are saved?

Hint:  There was only one sinless One and it wasn’t one of us.

Another hint:  almost every human interaction is tainted by sin.  We live in a fallen world.  It doesn’t usually separate out into one sinless person who is being mightily vexed by a host of fallen people!

But it does often separate out into people who are honestly trying to grow in their faith, while other people spend (waste) their time nitpicking all the things that the people who are growing still need to fix in their lives.

Third hint:  we all have quite a laundry list of things we need to fix in our lives, until we get to heaven.  How about we work on those instead of stalling out our own Christian growth (yes, we do that!!!) by scrutinizing others and making it our project to fix them.

Words matter.  Jesus said all of them matter.  He said we will give an account for every idle word.  How about we give out the lifegiving gospel to a dying world?  Let’s make our words matter.
